Ramadhan An Ideal Time To Quit Smoking: Imams

Ramadhan An Ideal Time To Quit Smoking: Imams

Bandar Seri Begawan - Imams yesterday urged smokers to quit the habit saying that the upcoming Ramadhan celebration will be an ideal time to make it happen.

If such a resolution is made by the faithful, it will help ease the problem of smoking that is affecting the nation as a whole. The fasting month would be the ideal time for those smokers who had tried and hitherto failed to kick the habit, the Imams said in their Friday sermon.

Religious practices such as reciting the 'Doa', al-Quran, performing ‘Zikir' (glorifying Allah the Almighty) normally intensify during Ramadhan while the prayers could also assist smokers to get rid of their bad habit, besides gaining rewards from Allah by performing all other highly-recommended activities.

One's condition and environment would change during Ramadhan be it at work, or home when compared to other months.

If the smoker normally lights-up the cigarette after lunch, it will not be possible during the holy month as Muslims are refrained from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk during Ramadhan.

The nation will mark the first day of Ramadhan either on Wednesday (Aug 11) or Thursday (Aug 12) depending on the result of moon sighting on Tuesday.

Imams also said that Ramadhan is the month where there is a revelation of the Quran and many historical events have taken place during the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) like Badr war where Muslims fought against non-Muslims, invasion of the holy city of Mecca by Prophet Muhammad and fellow Muslims.

Blessing and forgiveness are given to Muslims who make use of the holy month as heaven's doors will be wide open, hell closed shut and Satan tied-up. There are endless benefits gained when fasting such as refraining inner-self from sinful acts and controlling one's desires, being afraid of Allah and by doing meritorious deeds forbidding all ills.

"Let us hope that by performing the holy fast and embracing it, we would gain blessings. We also hope that we could perform the fast with patience so that Allah would accept our sacrificial act of fasting," the Imams concluded.
