Function of Mind in evaluating the truth on Religious Knowledge - Fungsi Akal dalam menilai kebenaran Ilmu Agama


Often heard, we can not use the logic of reason, we can not use our mind and many more phrases when refer to certain argument on saying of person who looks pious and having many followers.

In other situation, followers of certain groups just accept whatever teachings of their teacher, even the truth of the words or teachings of their teacher seems creating some confusion. 

Of course the use of mind is important in accepting religious knowledge so that we do not fall into the wrong path caused by the attitude of believing anything said by a person or teacher who looks pious in our eyes but at the same time we must know the limits and how to use our mind so that we will not misled by our own judgment.

The Position and Role of the Mind in Islam

What is the position of the human mind in relation to Islam? Does Islam asks the human mind to accept everything without any thinking? Does Islam allow the human mind to think as it wishes without any restraint?

To answer these questions we say that Islam allowed, and in fact, asked the human beings to use their minds in thinking about all things in this life, with some limitations. The human being is a created being and he can not know everything.

The human beings’ mind cannot reach information about the unseen-world, like the attributes of Allah, angels, and the events of the Day of Judgment without a revelation. Therefore, the mind is not supposed to think about it, unless it’s told about them.

The human beings’ mind can not know the wisdom behind a lot of Islamic worship activities and Islamic fiqh rules (Islamic jurisprudence.)

Therefore what are the fields that Islam asked the human mind to think about. There are many of them. Some of which are:

To think about two great facts:
The existence and unity of Allah.
The verification of revelation, prophet hood and the message of Allah.

As for the first fact in which Islam asked the human mind to think about the existence and unity of Allah. Here are some proofs from Qur’an.
Allah (S.W.T.) said in surat Ali-Emran, (verse 190), what can be translated as, "Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of Night and Day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding."

Allah (S.W.T.) Asked and he knows the answer in surat At-Tur, (verse 35 & 36), what can be translated as, "Or were they created out of naught? Or are they the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they are sure of nothing!" Allah (S.W.T.) also said in surat Al-Abnbia, (verse 22 to 24), what can be translated as, "If there were in the heavens and the earth other gods besides Allah, their would have been confusion in both but glory to God, the Lord of Throne, above what they attribute to him) to ( or have they taken for worship other Gods besides him? Say. "Bring your convincing proof."

In another place, Allah (S.W.T.) said in surat Al-Mo’menon, (verse 91), what can be translated as, "No son did Allah beget, Nor is there any god along with him, if there were many gods, behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have Lorded it over others."

Let's now look at the second great fact that Islam asked the human mind to think about and that is the verification of the revelation, prophet hood, and the messages from Allah. In this case the judge is the human mind. There is no ground here to get proofs from Qur’an and sunah. Because if the human mind thinks and accepts the 1st fact, that is, the existence and unity of Allah, then that same human mind should know that Allah will never leave his servants in darkness and ignorance without some type of revelation through some type of messengers.
In addition to the previous two facts, Islam encouraged the human mind to think about laws of Islam and try to deduce laws for things that has no clear cut evidence of course taking into account the Islamic legislative basics like bringing benefits, eliminating bad doings and narrowness and confinement as well as considering necessities and rating the circumstances of place and time. That is why we see all of these scholars dedicating and concluding laws that will fit our world of today, making use of the great flexibility of Islam.
Also notice that there is a continuous confusion between many matters of ethics and fiqh. Imam Bukhari and Muslim reported that the prophet, (S.A.W.), said: "the permissible things are clear and the forbidden things are clear and between the two, there are things that cause confusion that not too many people know and whoever avoids those doubtful things will purify and clarify his religion and his honor and dignity."

Also the prophet (S.A.W.) said in a good hadith reported by Imam Ahmed and Addarami "Just ask your heart about it .' Virtue is a thing which satisfies your self and eases the heart; and sin is a thing which disturbs the self and worries the heart ; although some persons may declare it lawful and may solicit your opinion on such matters."

Therefore, it is really your mind, which has to clear the confusion between all these matters.
Islam has never asked you to stop thinking, but asked you to use your mind in looking at this universe.

Allah (S.W.T.) said in surat Younos, (verse 101), what can be translated as, "Say: Behold all that is in the havens and on the earth." And Allah (S.W.T.) said in surat Ath-Thariyat, (verse & and 21), what can be translated as, "On the earth are signs for those of assured faith, as also in your own selves: will you not then see."
Islam has asked you to discover the secrets of this universe and make use of them for our benefits.

Allah (S.W.T.) said in surat Al-Jatheyah, (verse 13), what can be translated as, "And he has subjected to you, as from him, all that is in the heavens and on earth: behold, in that are signs indeed for those who reflect."
And when Allah (S.W.T.) talked in the Qur’an about other nations whom he destroyed as a result of their unbelief; he asks us to make use of their experience so that we will not be destroyed as they were destroyed for example, in surat Al-Hasher, (verse 2), He said: what can be translated as, "take warning, then, you with eyes."

And also in surat Al-Hajj, (verse 46), Allah said what can be translated as, "Do not they travel through the land so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind but their hearts which are in their breasts."

The Conclusion is that Islam does not prevent the human mind to think, but instead Islam gives our mind guidance and assistance in some areas. On the other hand, Islam gives and encourages our minds to think in some other areas that were mentioned before.

Lets use our minds and think deeply in the areas, the Qur'an encourages us to do so. Furthermore, lets stop thinking about the areas that the mind cannot reach like unseen words, worship acts, and divine rules. The source of all of these is the revelation from Allah (S.W.T.).

Ordinary People and the Truth of Knowledge علم / Orang Awam dan Kebenaran Ilmu

Conclusion, as an ordinary people, we should use mind/akal in evaluating the religious knowledge that we hear or read. The use of akal should be based on the knowledge ( 'Ilm علم ) and the principles of knowledge, particularly from the Quran and Hadith.

As example, we can not use common sense related to hukum in fiqh ( ie: what should we do if we forget how many raka'at we have done during prayer ) but when some one give a negative translation on the name of Allah, our mind must be able to think and reject the idea (the translation) because the judgment of our Mind surely can not accept such negative translation on the name of Allah, the creator of all mankind. Furthermore, based on the knowledge we have learn, Allah must not be attributed except with attributes of perfection

We need to study religious knowledge from a teacher or guru, a religious talk and we also need to read the books / kitabs which were written by renowned scholars. This is because as the ordinary people we are not able to understand the teachings of religion and its implementation by just simply reading the Quran and Hadith. only.

Kitab, teachers and religious lectures function as to give understanding or clear view on what already present in the Quran and Hadith.

If we are diligent in reading the Quran and Hadith as well the translation, will certainly, insyaAllah facilitate our minds to judge the truth of a knowledge that we hear or read. This is because whatever knowledge out there must not against the principles of knowledge and truth that taught by Quran and Hadith.

Therefore we must have a diligent and enthuthiasm in reading Quran followed by the translation if we are not of those who understand the language of the Qur'an.

Reading the translation will give us the clue on what the sentence we are reading saying about. To get the real understanding we still have to learn from expert or teacher because translation always downgraded the real meaning of the sentence or ayat of Quran

By reading the Qur'an, we will gain inspiration for our mind in thinking and making a judgment..Futhermore, we will get better understanding on the actual teaching of Islam. This is because, by reading Quran means we're learning from the actual Owner of the Knowledge.

Dengan membaca al-Quran, kita akan mendapat inspirasi untuk minda kita dalam berfikir dan membuat penghakiman. Tambahan pula, kita akan mendapat pemahaman yang lebih baik mengenai ajaran sebenar Islam. Ini adalah kerana, dengan membaca Al-Quran bermakna kita sedang belajar dari Pemilik sebenar Ilmu tersebut
