Concept of God in Islam
WAMY Series: On Islam No.9.

God's Attributes
The Oneness of God
The Believer's Attitude

It is a known fact that every language has one or more terms that are used in reference to God and sometimes to lesser deities. This is not the case with Allah. Allah is the personal name of the One true God. Nothing else can be called Allah. The term has no plural or gender. This shows its uniqueness when compared with the word "god," which can be made plural, as in "gods," or made feminine, as in "goddess." It is interesting to notice that Allah is the personal name of God in Aramaic, the language of Jesus and a sister language of Arabic.

The One true God is a reflection of the unique concept that Islam associates with God. To a Muslim, Allah is the Almighty Creator and Sustainer of the universe, Who is similar to nothing, and nothing is comparable to Him. The Prophet Muhammad was asked by his contemporaries about Allah; the answer came directly from God Himself in the form of a short chapter of the Qur'an, which is considered to be the essence of the unity or the motto of monotheism. This is chapter 112, which reads: In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Say (O Muhammad), He is God, the One God, the Everlasting Refuge, who has not begotten, nor has been begotten, and equal to Him is not anyone.

Some non-Muslims allege that God in Islam is a stern and cruel God who demands to be obeyed fully and is not loving and kind. Nothing could be farther from the truth than this allegation. It is enough to know that, with the exception of one, each of the 114 chapters of the Qur'an begins with the verse " In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate". In one of the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), we are told that  God is more loving and kind than a mother to her dear child.

On the other hand, God is also Just. Hence, evildoers and sinners must have their share of punishment, and the virtuous must have God's bounties and favors. Actually, God's attribute of Mercy has full manifestation in His attribute of Justice. People suffering throughout their lives for His sake should not receive similar treatment from their Lord as people who oppress and exploit others their whole lives. Expecting similar treatment for them would amount to negating the very belief in the accountability of man in the Hereafter and thereby negate all the incentives for a moral and virtuous life in this world. The following Qur'anic verses are very clear and straightforward in this respect.

Verily, for the Righteous are gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord. Shall We then treat the people of Faith like the people of Sin? What is the matter with you? How judge you?

Islam rejects characterizing God in any human form or depicting Him as favoring certain individuals or nations on the basis of wealth, power or race. He created the human-beings as equals. They may distinguish themselves and get His favor through virtue and piety only.

The concepts that God rested on the seventh day of creation, that God wrestled with one of His soldiers, that God is an envious plotter against mankind, and that God is incarnate in any human being are considered blasphemy from the Islamic point of view.

The unique usage of Allah as a personal name of God is a reflection of Islam's emphasis on the purity of the belief in God that is the essence of the message of all God's messengers. Because of this, Islam considers associating any deity or personality with God as a deadly sin that God will never forgive, despite the fact that He may forgive all other sins.

The Creator must be of a different nature from the things created because if He is of the same nature as they are, He will be temporal and will therefore need a maker. It follows that nothing is like Him. If the maker is not temporal, then he must be eternal. But if he is eternal, he cannot be caused, and if nothing caused Him to come into existence, nothing outside Him causes Him to continue to exist, which means that he must be self-sufficient. And if He does not depend on anything for the continuance of His own existence, then this existence can have no end. The Creator is therefore eternal and everlasting: "He is the First and the Last".

He is Self-sufficient or Self-subsistent, or, to use a Qur'anic term, Al-Qayyum The Creator does not create only in the sense of bringing things into being, He. also preserves them and takes them out of existence and is the ultimate cause of whatever happens to them.

God is the Creator of everything. He is the guardian over everything. Unto Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth (39:62-63).

No creature is there crawling on the earth, but its provision rests on God. He knows its lodging place and its repository (11:16).

God's Attributes

If the Creator is Eternal and Everlasting, then His attributes must also be eternal and everlasting. He should not lose any of His attributes nor acquire new ones. If this is so, then his attributes are absolute. Can there be more than one Creator with such absolute attributes? Can there be, for example, two absolutely powerful Creators? A moment's thought shows that this is not feasible.

The Qur'an summarizes this argument in the following verses: God has not taken to Himself any son, nor is there any god with Him: for then each god would have taken of that which he created and some of them would have risen up over others (23:91).

And why, were there gods in earth and heaven other than God, they (heaven and earth) would surely go to ruin (21:22).

The Oneness of God

The Qur'an reminds us of the falsity of all alleged gods. To the worshippers of man-made objects it asks: Do you worship what you have carved yourself (37:95). Or have you taken unto yourself others beside Him to be your protectors, even such as have no power either for good or for harm to themselves (13:16).

To the worshippers of heavenly bodies it cites the story of Abraham: When night outspread over him, he saw a star and said: This is my Lord. But when it set, he said: I love not the setters. When he saw the moon rising, he said: This is my Lord. But when it set, he said: If my Lord does not guide me, I shall surely be of the people gone astray. When he saw the sun rising, he said: This is my Lord; this is greater. But when it set, he said: O my people, surely I quit that which you associate, I have turned my face to Him who originated the heavens and the earth; a man of pure faith, I am not one of the idolators (6:76-79).

The Believer's Attitude

In order to be a Muslim, that is, to surrender oneself to God, it is necessary to believe in the oneness of God, in the sense of His being the only Creator, Preserver, Nourisher, etc. But this belief, later called Tawhid Ar-Rububiyyah, is not enough. Many of the idolators knew and believed that only the Supreme God could do all this. But this was not enough to make them Muslims. To tawhid ar-rububiyyah, one must add tawhid al-'uluhiyyah. That is, one acknowledges the fact that it is God alone who deserves to be worshipped, and thus abstains from worshipping any other thing or being.

Having achieved this knowledge of the one true God, man should constantly have faith in Him, and should allow nothing to induce him to deny truth.

When faith enters a person's heart, it causes certain mental states that result in certain actions. Taken together, these mental states and actions are the proof for the true faith. The Prophet said: Faith is that which resides firmly in the heart and which is proved by deeds.

Foremost among those mental stated is the feeling of gratitude towards God, which could be said to be the essence of ibada (worship).

The feeling of gratitude is so important that a non-believer is called 'kafir', which means 'one who denies a truth' and also 'one who is ungrateful'.

A believer loves, and is grateful to God for the bounties He bestowed upon him, but being aware of the fact that his good deeds, whether mental or physical, are far from being commensurate with Divine favors, he is always anxious lest God should punish him, here or in the Hereafter. He, therefore, fears Him, surrenders himself to Him and serves Him with great humility. One cannot be in such a mental state without being almost all the time mindful of God. Remembering God is thus the life force of faith, without which it fades and withers away.

The Qur'an tries to promote this feeling of gratitude by repeating the attributes of God very frequently. We find most of these attributes mentioned together in the following verses of the Qur'an: He is God; there is no god but He. He is the Knower of the unseen and the visible; He is the All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate. He is God; there is no god but He. He is the King, the All-Holy, the All-Peace, the Guardian of the Faith, the All-Preserver, the All-Mighty, the All-Compeller, the All-Sublime. Glory be to God, above that they associate! He is God, the Creator, the Maker, the Shaper. To Him belong the Names Most Beautiful. All that is in the heavens and the earth magnifies Him; He is the Almighty, the All-Wise (59:22-24).

There is no god but He, the Living, the Everlasting. Slumber seizes Him not, nor sleep. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. Who is there that shall intercede with Him save by His leave? He knows what lies before them, and what is after them, and they comprehend not anything of His knowledge save such as He wills. His throne comprises the heavens and earth. The preserving of them oppresses Him not; He is the All-High, the All-Glorious (2:255).

People of the Book, go not beyond the bounds in your religion, and say not as to God but the truth.

The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was only the Messenger of God, and His Word that He committed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His Messengers, and say not "Three". Refrain; better it is for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him -- (He is) above having a son (4:171).

Allah is the name of God. It is a violation of rule in any language if the name of Allah which is a noun is used as a pronouns even though by the Arabic language

the word God should be translated as

Hujah Pelik

Al -'The', lah - 'God'. It means the God. It was one of the gods worshipped by the Arabs. His female equivalent was Allat, al- 'the', Lat 'goddess'. Muhammed's followers did not like the concept of worshipping a female diety.

Nonsense Argument
There are writers of article and politicians who take the argument that the use of the name of Allah in Arabic and Malay bible to allow the non-Muslims to replace the word God with name of Allah in their daily conversation or translation of the bible that they use.

Surely this is a very strange argument in terms of logic and fact. Actually the use of name of Allah in lieu of the word God by Arab and Malay Christians only prove that religion which was revealed by God from Prophet Adam to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Eesa (Jesus) and Prophet Muhammad is Islam.

Prophet Abraham was the father of two nations, the Arabs and Jews. Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) was an Arab and Ishak (Isaac) was a Jew ( Yahudi). The Arabs have grown accustomed to the word of Allah, even after they deviated due to the time that passes until they forget the teachings of Islam that was revealed to the previous Messenger of Allah.. Finally, God sent Prophet Muhammad to remind that the entire universe is belong to Allah. Allah the only God. At the same time to make us realize that, in reality there is no other god exist except Allah.

With co
nfusion between their descendants familiarity and their understanding on the real meaning of the word Allah, some of them continue to use the word Allah disregard the meaning of the word itself. This is the only reason why Arab Christians use the word Allah as a translation to the word God from the English bible to Arabic bible. If there is any other reasons, they are more to mean of negative purposes such as wanting to cause confusion amongs the public that their religious also worship the same God as the God of Muslims.

Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) to be affected by Allah's Reminder (this Quran), and that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before (i.e. Jews and Christians), and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many of them were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).- Quran 57:16

Of course anyone who read the allegations and arguments of the non-Muslim researchers related the origin of the word Allah will feel so weird on how they came out with the false idea as their argument.

Among the false claims they made

Al -'The', lah - 'God'. It means the God. It was one of the gods worshipped by the Arabs. His female equivalent was Allat, al- 'the', Lat 'goddess'. Muhammed's followers did not like the concept of worshipping a female diety.

Refer to the following verse of Quran, let's we think. The verses of Quran is from Allah dan Al Quran already exist before this world is created. How can history of this world which came after the Quran exist can give influence to the existance of the word Allah itself.

Quran 3:39
And the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: Allah giveth thee glad tidings of (a son whose name is) John, (who cometh) to confirm a word from Allah lordly, chaste, a prophet of the righteous.."

In addition, the creation of God like Prophet Adam and Angels (Malaikat) also have used the word Allah as the name of God. Adam himself while arguing with Moses has used the word Allah as name of God

The English Translation

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There was an argument between Adam and Moses (peace be upon both of them) in the presence of their Lord. Adam came the better of Moses. Moses said: Are you that Adam whom Allah created with His Hand and breathed into himHis sprit, and commanded angels to fall in prostration before him and He made you live in Paradise with comfort and ease. Then you caused the people to get down to the earth because of your lapse. Adam said: Are you that Moses whom Allah selected for His Messengership and for His conversation with him and conferred upon you the tablets, in which everything was clearly explained and granted you the audience in order to have confidential talk with you. What is your opinion, how long Torah would haye been written before I was created? Moses said: Forty years before. Adam said: Did you not see these words: Adam committed an error and he was enticed to (do so). He (Moses) said: Yes. Whereupon, he (Adam) said: Do you then blame me for an act which Allah had ordained for me forty years before He created me? Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: This is how Adam came the better of Moses.
Chain - Ishaq bin Musa bin 'Abdullah bin MusaAbu Damra, Anas bin 'Ayyadal-Harith bin 'Abdur RahmanYazid bin Hrmz al-Madni

Unfortunately, some of us were confused by the arguments proclaimed by politicians and famous article writers, ostensibly is the right of non-muslim to use name of Allah in lieu of the word of God just because Arab Christians since the first use the word.

Surely this is just a ridiculous argument

All this while, we have not facing any problem with Christian in Malaysia.

Christian can say the world Allah, there is no problem about it. The previous people also used to say the world Allah.

And (remember) when you said: "O Musa (Moses)! We shall never believe in you till we see Allah plainly." But you were seized with a thunderbolt (lightning) while you were looking.- Quran 2:55

What we are going to explain is, don't translate the word God, Lord or Tuhan to Allah. This is because the world Allah did not exist in the English bible, Greek bible or Hebrew bible. So why shoud it appear in Malay or Melayu bible..

What for to let your self being cheated by someone who have their own interest. What is the purpose to translate the word God or Lord to Allah when the name of your God in the bible before translated into Malay language or English is Yahweh atau Elohim .

( refer to this

"Give thanks to Yahweh, call on his name..." Psalms 105:1a

In the Bible there are many different names given to the One True God. The most frequently used names are YHWH, usually rendered as Yahweh (ca. 6,800 times); Elohim (ca. 2,600 times); Adonai (ca. 439 times); and El (ca. 238 times). Most of the other names are combinations of these names like El Shaddai, El Eloah, and Yahweh Elohim. The most commonly used names for God in the Hebrew and Protestant Bibles are Ha-Shem (meaning "the name" which is used in the modern Jewish Masoretic Text translations of the Tanach) and Jehovah (used in both Protestant and Jewish translations). Both are names for God that only date back to the Middle Ages and are not found in the ancient texts of Sacred Scripture. to continue )

The world God or Lord if translated into Malay or Melayu language should be " Tuhan "  not Allah. Allah is a nouns instead of pronouns and it is wrong if refer to grammar to translate a pronouns to a word which is a nouns, vice versa.

Ahli Kitab / People of Scripture/ People of Book
Some say Christian or Jews can use the word Allah because they are people of Scripture. Use here means to replace the word lord or God to the name of Allah.

Actually there are no more ahli kitab or people of book nowadays. The features of people of scripture should be refer to the following principle in the following verse of Quran.

Muhsin Khan
Not all of them are alike; a party of the people of the Scripture stand for the right, they recite the Verses of Allah during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves in prayer.
They are not all alike. Of the People of the Scripture there is a staunch community who recite the revelations of Allah in the night season, falling prostrate (before Him).

Yusuf Ali
Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration.

The people of scripture still worship the One God. In their book still appear the sign of the coming prophet who is the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Even though the book also not complete due to the missing many of the parts during compilation which done hundreds of years after Prophet Isa (Jesus) convey the massage.

Today bible has change even the real name of Prophet Eesa or Isa to Jesus and we even can find the name of Allah inside it. Many changes have been done by some one who have their own interest.

The trinity concept of God actually created by some one. It was not from the teaching of Prophet Isa because Prophet Isa (Jesus) is a Muslim.

Actually the bible in the hand of Christian today is a book of translation instead of a scripture. That;s why we can find the name Jesus in english bible and name change again in Indonesian bible with name Yesus. What is his name in the hebrew bible, is it still Jesus ?

A name of a Prophet to muslim and to some Christian is the son of God simply change based on which language the bible translated. This should not be happened because it is a name.  No one have the right to change name of anybody.

The logic is, if some one simply can change the name of the son of God (as the Christian belief ) they also can change many other things

May be this can be the prove that today bible had went through many episodes of changing and adding. You can find the reality of Jesus also difference with the one written in the today bible.
