O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad SAW) !
Stand (to pray) all night, except a little.
Half of it, or a little less than that,
Or a little more; and recite the Quran with "Tartil" .

Makhraj of the Letters

*******
The Makhaarij of the Letters
Definition : The correct position of the organs of speech in order to produce a letter so that it can be differentiated from others. This is equally so whether the letter is a consonant or a vowel.

Being able to recite the letters correctly is the foundation of tajweed, and this is achieved by knowing where the sound originates. This can then help in practising the pronunciation of the letters correctly.

The diagram below gives a snapshot of where each letter originates :

There are 5 main categories of Makhaarij :

1. The oral cavity - Al Jawf -  اﻟﺠَﻮف
2. The throat - Al Halq - اﻟﺤَﻠﻖ
3. The tongue - Al Lissaan -
4. The lips - Ash-shafatain -
5. The nasal cavity - Al Khayshoom - اﻟﺨَﻴﺸُﻮم

Makharij (Points of Articulation of Letters) _____________________________________________________

Definition: The place from which the sound of a letter originates.

How is the Makhraj of a Letter Determined ?

The scholars of tajweed explain that the makhraj of an Arabic letter is determined by:

1. Putting a sakin or shaddah (shaddah is preferred) on the letter you are trying to determine the makhraj of.

2. Putting a hamzah with any vowel before the letter.

Where the sound stops is the makhraj of the letter.
nota: Sakin - tanda Mati, Shaddah- Tanda Sabdu
