Sulbi and Taraib

I've a question about the Quran. Allah says: ''yakhruju min baini sulbi wa taraaib'' What do you say about this?

We reaffirm that Islam is not dependent nor based upon scientific discovery and the site merely tries to point out that which coincides with scientific discovery or alludes to it. Dr. Az-Zindaani and others bring forth not the basic commentary or explanation of the texts but rather possible or probable interpretations based on what is known from a scientific view and he clearly shows that it is impossible that certain statements could be coincidental or even made at all without a certain degree of scientific knowledge unavailable at the time of Muhammad . Indeed some of the perspective held by Dr. Az-Zindaani or any Muslim possessing sound belief (i.e. belief based upon Islamic pillars of belief) will approach and view matters in a light that the non-believer or the one who does not have an Islamic base will not.

Certainly a secular humanist who seeks to divorce religious thought from other aspects of life- if not all - or to dismiss it as being irrelevant or not conducive to progressive thought and scientific pursuit, or who believes that they can attain guidance or pure morality based upon their rational intellect alone will have great difficulty with much of what is written in Islamic literature in general. Indeed, one may take issue with the conclusions of the book but you should also be aware of the depth of the Arabic language and its nuances which seems to be a point somewhat lost on certain critics who always depend upon translations in languages like English or any others which are themselves interpretations.

For example, the entire objection and translation of the verses 'min bainasulbi wat taraa'ib" Sura- (86:6-7) as "He is created from a drop emitted - proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs" or as in the Quranic translation by Maulana Fazlur Rahman Munshi, the Ayaat (86:6-7) were translated as: "semen is produced from the back of a man and from the breasts (mammary glands) of an woman." is a perfect example of where the critic is obviously limited in his understanding of Arabic language and even the rules of Qur'aanic textual interpretation and is thus totally dependent on translations and his own rationale or understanding or that of a translator who as well is limited.

It is agreed that these verses if translated and taken literally clearly contradict what is now known and proven to be the origin of semen or sperm or the female side of it. However the use of metaphor is very common in the Arabic language and when faced with what is a clear contradiction to established fact, Islamic scholars stand upon a basic rule that "The Qur'aan or the authentic hadeeth cannot contradict what is known to be an absolute fact" therefore if such texts are found, the scholar is forced to re-examine the interpretation of the texts.

It is very possible that the scientific level of knowledge and understanding of the people in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as well as those before him and long after forced them to interpret this text from a 'scientific' point of view erroneously (i.e. "semen is produced from the back of a man and from the breasts (mammary glands) of an woman." see Ibn Katheer and other classical commentaries) but the fundamental understanding of the verse that sulb refers to the male and taraaib to the female in no way contradicts any scientific fact.

Dr. Maurice Bucaille mentions in his famous work "The Bible, the Qur'an and Science" (p. 208) about these verses: "The sexual area of the man is indicated in the text of the Qur'aan by the word "sulb" (singular). the sexual areas of the woman are designated in the Qur'aan by the word "taraa'ib" (plural).

This is the translation which appears to be the most satisfactory. It is different from the one that is often given by English and French translators, i.e. "(Man) has been created by a liquid poured forth which issues from between the vertebral column and the bones of the breast." this would seem more to be an interpretation than a translation. It is hardly comprehensible.

The behavior of a man in his intimate relationships with his wife is stated implicitly."

Allah says in Surah At-Tariq:

"(5) LET MAN, then, observe out of what he has been created: (6) he has been created out of a seminal fluid (7) issuing from between the back bone ( spinal column) and ribs ( chest bone) *

*yakhruju min baini sulbi wa taraaib'' Sulb means back bone which in medical terminology is called vertebral column or spinal column and taraib is a plural world meaning ribs which are in 12 pairs guarding the chest.#

EXPLANATION:

The seminal fluid (semen) is produced in a pair of testis (the male reproductive organ} situated in scrotum (coverings round the testis). Of course in an adult person the testis are not situated in between the back bone and chest bone but these have an embryological relation (developmental)
to a site which is situated "in between the back bone and ribs": According to the research done in the field of Embryology (science of human development) the pair of testis which produce seminal fluid, start developing at lumber region, during intrauterine life i.e. the time when the child is in the womb of mother. This area is exactly in-between the backbone and the ribs. Latter on as child develops the testis descends down and before the time the child is born, the testis has descended to scrotum (coverings around the testis). But their control i.e. the nerve supply remains at the same lumber region through out the life of the person. Further to say whenever there is any injury inflicted to that region, the sexual act is lost. Secondly the nourishment for the testis i.e. the blood supply also come from the same lumber region through out the life of a person, that to if hampered at any time results into loss of the function of the testis. Meaning there by although the testis descend down but their control and nourishment remain at a site which is "in-between the back bone and ribs.

QURANIC REFERENCE:

What the scientific research workers became to know about the development of reproductive system of human being, during 19th century, God has already told The Prophet( peace be upon him) in Surah At-Tariq about 1400 years back.

Penjelasan daripada buku Quran Saintifik
nukilan Dr Danial Zainal Abidin.

Mengikut Hans Wehr A Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic pula, sulbi membawa maksud "vertebral column, loin," iaitu tulang belakang atau kawasan pinggang secara umum.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Between the two blowing of the trumpet there will be forty." The people said, "O Abu Huraira! Forty days?" I refused to reply. They said, "Forty years?" I refused to reply and added: Everything of the human body will decay except the coccyx bone (of the tail) and from that bone Allah will reconstruct the whole body.

Ajab Al-Zanab and the cell theory

EVIDENCE that life did never come from non-living matter is so abundant that the geneticists have held a Principle of Biogenesis that living things come only from living things.

The creation of everything in the primitive origin was as per the plan and the will of God. The scientists have discovered one of the most amazing facts that all beings are composed of cells.

They have found that (a) Cells arise from pre-existing cells; (b) All organisms are composed of cells; and (c) The cells are the structural and functional unit of life. The aforementioned facts are known as Cell Theory.

The cell consists of various components, which include outer wall, protoplasm and nuclei.

Nuclei carries within it chromosomes. Much of the DNA (deoxyrebonucleic acid) is localized in chromosomes of nuclei. Each chromosome contains a definite group of genes.

The geneticists have agreed unanimously that the same chemical substance, DNA, in the form of genes accounts for all living matter to replicate itself exactly to its kind and transmit genetic information from parent to offspring.

Scientists say, DNA is like a microscopic computer with a built-in memory. It stores a fantastic number of blue prints and at the right time and place, it issues orders to build all the cells and structures of plants, animals and human beings. This DNA is a chemical compound of which the genes are made. DNA contains a built-in code a blue print, a tape recording that keeps all forms of life within their basic kinds.

The Qur’an pointing to the built-in code in the nucleus of every living cell said: “Our Lord is He Who gave every living thing its constitution then guided it aright.” (20:50). Guided it aright points to the code its cell.
The scientists are unanimous that living cell has retained its shape and form in all the ages after its creation in the body of Adam. Similar is the case of animal and plant cells and they could never be subjected to any change or mutation. DNA molecule contains genes. Each gene contains a thousand or more units; it makes for fantastic variety within a kind. That is why in human family hardly any two men look alike even though there are more than four billion people in the world.

The scientists are unanimous that the system inside the cell is so rigid and constructive that there is not the remotest possibility of any evolution in it. One should see with eyes open that Allah (God) is such an amazing Creator that He in a speck of every living thing has placed capability of procreation in the primitive origin and put a code in the speck to replicate everything to its kind.

The Qur’an says: “For He (God) is well-versed in creation of all life forms.” (36:79)

Writing recently in a book, ‘Did Man Get Here By Evolution Or By Creation?’, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Professor Rutherford Platt, said: “These DNA specks have similar chemical composition, are about the same size and look very much like those in your dog, or in a house fly, a bread mold or a blade of grass. Yet somehow the specks are coded to make every living thing different from every other living thing. They make dog different from fish or birds, bread mold from apple trees, elephants from mosquitoes. (Readers Digest Oct. 1962, p144)

Allah said: “And among the signs that you see the earth barren, but when We send down rain to it, it is stirred to life and growth (of vegetation). Verily He who gives it life, surely is able to give life to the dead. Verily He is able to do all things.” (41:39) In a report of Muslim, Abu Dawood and Al-Nasai, Abu Hurairah said: “Man when buried, his body is eaten away by the earth except a seed in human body known in Arabic as ‘Ajab Al-Zanab.’

Allah will send a (special) rain of life. It will make to grow the green vegetation including the bodies from the graves. When the bodies come out, the Trumpet will be blown; and all the souls of mankind will be blown into their own bodies. “And behold they will be standing waiting.” (39:68)

Bukhari Hadith, quoting Abu Hurairah, says: “Everything in human body is destroyed except the cell, Ajab Al-Zanab, and people will come out as per code in it.

What is Ajab Al-Zanab?

Ajab Al-Zanab is a human cell in everyman’s body. When a man is buried in the grave, his entire body is destroyed but this cell is indestructible.

Polytheists like Hindus burn their dead bodies but this cell still remains intact and unharmed. Before resurrection, Allah will send down a rain, it is called the rain of life, which will give life to all the human cells.
Allah said: “Does man think We shall not assemble his bones. Yes, Verily We are able to restore the tips of his fingers.” (75: 3-4)

The bones of the dead scatter and even turn to dust but Allah will not only gather his bones but even restore the finger tips, which are more sophisticated than bones. In the 7th century, when the Qur’an was being revealed, nobody knew the peculiarity in the fingertips of each man that they totally differ from each other, but the 20th century scientific findings established the difference in finger tips of each person. The verse reveals that Allah has kept a specific distinction in each person with intention to his revival.
It is preceded in cell biology the existence of a system there by everything replicates itself. When the plants die their cells remain scattered in the earth, they do not die. These cells are quickened when nourished by the rain.

It proves that as the cells of plants are revived by rains, in the same way Allah will give life with a rain known as rain of life to human cell in the earth, known as ‘Ajab Al-Zanab’ that contains a built-in code including his shape, form, stature, color and finger tips to replicate every man as he was in this world. All the souls will enter their bodies with the blow of the trumpet of resurrection. Then all the human beings will be gathered on a place for reckoning and Judgment.

Those who question the authenticity of the Qur’an and the atheists who deny the existence of God would do well to study these findings of the science of genetics, which has discovered that even the best laboratories in the world cannot produce a cell. Ruther Platt in his book, “The River of life,” p. 100, states: “So perfect is the original one-cell form of life and so potent both for body-building, for activating nerves and muscles and for procreation, that the cell has never altered its basic size or nature from the beginning of life to this day.”
Allah said: “Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us (for account)?” (Qur’an, 23:115)

Certainly, Allah has created a cell in the bodies of his slaves to revive or quicken them from their graves to reckon and reward good for their virtues and punish evildoers for their evil.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the full moon on a clear (not cloudy) night?" They replied, "No, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?" They replied in the negative. He said, "You will see Allah (your Lord) in the same way. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered and He will order the people to follow what they used to worship. So some of them will follow the sun, some will follow the moon, and some will follow other deities; and only this nation (Muslims) will be left with its hypocrites. Allah will come to them and say, 'I am Your Lord.' They will say, 'We shall stay in this place till our Lord comes to us and when our Lord will come, we will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to them again and say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'You are our Lord.' Allah will call them, and As-Sirat (a bridge) will be laid across Hell and I (Muhammad) shall be the first amongst the Apostles to cross it with my followers. Nobody except the Apostles will then be able to speak and they will be saying then, 'O Allah! Save us. O Allah Save us.' There will be hooks like the thorns of Sa'dan [??] in Hell. Have you seen the thorns of Sa'dan [??]?" The people said, "Yes." He said, "These hooks will be like the thorns of Sa'dan [??] but nobody except Allah knows their greatness in size and these will entangle the people according to their deeds; some of them will fall and stay in Hell forever; others will receive punishment (torn into small pieces) and will get out of Hell, till when Allah intends mercy on whomever He likes amongst the people of Hell, He will order the angels to take out of Hell those who worshipped none but Him alone. The angels will take them out by recognizing them from the traces of prostrations, for Allah has forbidden the (Hell) fire to eat away those traces. So they will come out of the Fire, it will eat away from the whole of the human body except the marks of the prostrations. At that time they will come out of the Fire as mere skeletons. The Water of Life will be poured on them and as a result they will grow like the seeds growing on the bank of flowing water. Then when Allah had finished from the Judgments amongst his creations, one man will be left between Hell and Paradise and he will be the last man from the people of Hell to enter paradise. He will be facing Hell, and will say, 'O Allah! Turn my face from the fire as its wind has dried me and its steam has burnt me.' Allah will ask him, "Will you ask for anything more in case this favor is granted to you?' He will say, "No by Your (Honor) Power!" And he will give to his Lord (Allah) what he will of the pledges and the covenants. Allah will then turn his face from the Fire. When he will face Paradise and will see its charm, he will remain quiet as long as Allah will. He then will say, 'O my Lord! Let me go to the gate of Paradise.' Allah will ask him, 'Didn't you give pledges and make covenants (to the effect) that you would not ask for anything more than what you requested at first?' He will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most wretched, amongst Your creatures.' Allah will say, 'If this request is granted, will you then ask for anything else?' He will say, 'No! By Your Power! I shall not ask for anything else.' Then he will give to his Lord what He will of the pledges and the covenants. Allah will then let him go to the gate of Paradise. On reaching then and seeing its life, charm, and pleasure, he will remain quiet as long as Allah wills and then will say, 'O my Lord ! Let me enter Paradise.' Allah will say, May Allah be merciful unto you, O son of Adam! How treacherous you are! Haven't you made covenants and given pledges that you will not ask for anything more that what you have been given?' He will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most wretched amongst Your creatures.' So Allah will laugh and allow him to enter Paradise and will ask him to request as much as he likes. He will do so till all his desires have been fulfilled . Then Allah will say, 'Request more of such and such things.' Allah will remind him and when all his desires and wishes; have been fulfilled, Allah will say "All this is granted to you and a similar amount besides." Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri, said to Abu Huraira, 'Allah's Apostle said, "Allah said, 'That is for you and ten times more like it.' "Abu Huraira said, "I do not remember from Allah's Apostle except (his saying), 'All this is granted to you and a similar amount besides." Abu Sa`id said, "I heard him saying, 'That is for you and ten times more the like of it."

The Quran Does NOT Say that Sperm is Created
from between the Backbone and Ribs

Understanding Verse 86:7 According to the Prophet’s Disciples, the Salaf, and the Classical Scholars
Question:

A Christian man named David Wood is claiming that the Quran says that semen is created from between the male’s backbone and his ribs. Modern science, however, tells us that semen comes from the testicles. David Wood is claiming that this proves that Prophet Muhammad was a false prophet. He, along with others, are making fun of the Prophet for not knowing where semen comes from.

The verse that David Wood cites is as follows:

Now let man but think From what he is created! He is created from A drop emitted—Proceedings from between the backbone (sulb) and the ribs (tara’ib). (Quran, 86:5-7)Can you please clarify this issue?

Answer by Dr. Ibn al-Hashimi:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Glorious, the Most Beneficent.

I was asked by brother Bassam Zawadi to answer your question. He hoped that due to my medical background, I would be able to properly address your concern. However, the truth of the matter is that I did not even need a medical education to answer your question; rather, all that I needed was a bit of common sense. Insha-Allah, I will address your question in full detail, leaving no doubt in the matter.

Before I begin, I’d like to thank brother Bassam, and give a quick plug for his website, www.call-to-monotheism.com. It’s an excellent website and a great resource for the English-speaking Muslims of the world. May God reward the tireless efforts of brother Bassam, who day in and day out combats the rising tide of Islamaphobia, which threatens peace and stability on this earth.

I’d also like to thank Shaykh Salman al-Oudah of www.IslamToday.com, one of the greatest scholars of our time. This reply would not have been possible without him. May God reward him.

Introduction

The translation used by Mr. David Wood is horribly inaccurate. The correct translation of ‘sulb’ is not backbone, nor does the word ‘tara’ib’ indicate the man’s ribs. Let us review the verse in question:

So let man consider from what he is created. He is created from an emitted fluid that issued from between the sulb and the tara’ib. (86:5-7)Mr. Wood has understood the verse to mean that both ‘sulb’ and ‘tara’ib’ refer to the male. In other words, the fluid emitted refers to the semen, and it comes out from in between the sulb and the tara’ib. However, the truth of the matter is that the word ‘tarai’b’—according to the Arabic—is actually referring to a female body part. Much like the English word ‘penis’ can only be ascribed to a male, the word ‘tara’ib’ can only be applied to a female.
This is not apologetic modernism or revisionism; the classical works of Quranic commentary throughout the last 1400 years confirm this view categorically. In other words, the sulb belongs to the male, and the tara’ib belongs to the female. This is the view of the Muslims since the last fourteen hundred years, and there is consensus (ijma) on this matter, since the time of the Sahabah (the Prophet’s disciples) until today.

Shaykh `Abd al-Wahhâb al-Turayrî of IslamToday.com writes:

The phrase “mâ’ dâfiq” (emitted fluid) is not restricted in meaning to sperm but is used in Arabic for both the sperm and the egg. Ibn Kathîr, in his commentary on this verse, writes: “It emanates from the man and the woman, and with Allah’s permission, the child comes forth as a product of both.”

…The words translated as “backbone” (sulb) and “ribs” (tarâ’ib) are not understood in Arabic to belong to the same person. Arabs understand the “sulb” to refer to a part of the male body and the “tarâ’ib” to a part of the female. Ibn Kathîr states: “It refers to the ‘sulb’ of the man and the ‘tarâ’ib’ of the woman…” He then quotes this interpretation on the authority of the Prophet’s companion Ibn `Abbâs. This same understanding is given in all the major classical works of Qur’anic commentary. Many non-Arabs misinterpret this verse because they think that sulb and tara’ib refer to different body parts of the male. In reality, tara’ib is feminine, and refers to the female’s body part. For fourteen hundred years, all of the scholars have held this belief, and not a single classical scholar has ever differed on this point. The reason is that the Arabic makes it clear that tara’ib refers to a feminine body part, and not a male one.

Lane’s Lexicon says:

Tara’ib: … most of the authors on strange words affirm decidedly that it (tara’ib) is peculiar to women. (Lane’s Lexicon, p.301)
All of the major commentaries of the Quran confirm that the tara’ib is peculiar to women. Ibn Katheer writes in his tafseer (commentary) of the Quran:

It (fluid) emanates from the man and the woman, and with Allah’s permission, the child comes forth as a product of both. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

Tafseer al-Jalalayn says:
Issuing from between the sulb, of the man, and the tara’ib, of the woman. (Tafseer Al-Jalalayn)
Tanwir al-Miqbas min Tafseer Ibn Abbas says:That issued from between the sulb of the man and the tara’ib of a woman.
(Tanwir al-Miqbas min Tafseer Ibn Abbas)
