Khalifa of Islam views Turin Shroud

His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad returned to London earlier this week. Today in the Friday sermon he spoke about his recent European tour. He visited France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. His tour proved to be very successful all around. On his way from Italy to Switzerland he visited the royal chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, northern Italy to view the Turin Shroud.

Significance of the Turin Shroud:

According to Wikipedia, "Some contend that the shroud is the cloth placed on the body of Jesus Christ at the time of his burial, and that the face image is the Holy Face of Jesus. Others contend that the artifact postdates the Crucifixion of Jesus by more than a millennium. Both sides of the argument use science and historical documents to make their case.The image on the shroud is much clearer in black-and-white negative than in its natural sepia color. The striking negative image was first observed on the evening of May 28, 1898, on the reverse photographic plate of amateur photographer Secondo Pia, who was allowed to photograph it while it was being exhibited in the Turin Cathedral. The Catholic Church has neither formally endorsed nor rejected the shroud, but in 1958 Pope Pius XII approved of the image in association with the Roman Catholic devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus."

His Holiness remained in the church for quite sometime. He viewed the shroud closely and spoke to the administrators of the exhibition and the researchers working in the Church. He explained the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community's point of view to them. He elucidated the events of the Crucifixion of Jesus. He said that it could very well be the cloth in which Prophet Jesus was wrapped after crucifixion but it definitely is not the cloth in which he passed away. According to Ahmadiyya Muslim's viewpoint, Prophet Jesus escaped the crucifixion, spent a few days with his apostles who cured him with a special ointment and then he traveled to India. He died in Kashmir, India, where his tomb is located. This theory was presented in a book called "Jesus in India" by the Promised Messiah Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in 1899. The Turin shroud only strengthens the view point of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. According to Mr. Faber-Kaiser, a scholar of comparative religion:

...After seven years of investigations concerning the shroud that covered (Christ's) body, many scientists have come to the conclusion that Jesus was buried alive. The experts affirm that the Holy Shroud preserved in Turin lay on a crucified body that suffered exactly the same passion as Jesus, but state that this person did not die on the cross, but was buried while still alive. The twenty-eight bloodstains on the shroud prove this. The investigators assure us that a corpse wrapped in a shroud could not bleed in that manner. Jesus was buried alive, unless a second Jesus existed, and he was made to suffer the same agony. (Jesus Died in Kashmir - Published in 1976).

Some people rejects the idea of Turin Shroud to belong to Jesus. Turin Shroud as well as Tomb of Jesus have both become controversial issues.

The shroud of Turin is expected to be viewed by 2 million people including Pope Benedict XVI.

The Shroud of Turin is the ‘alleged’ burial cloth of Jesus Christ(as). The cloth measures 4.37m by 1.1m (approximately 14 feet across) and exhibits a faint image of what looks like a crucified man. Between 10 April and 23 May this year, approximately two million visitors flocked to the northern Italian city of Turin to observe first hand this linen cloth, as the Shroud went on display for the first time in a decade. In April 2010, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), Khalifatul Masih V, Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community was given a private viewing of the Shroud of Turin (see ‘Historic Visit by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih V(aba) to the Shroud of Turin Exhibit’ featured in this edition – Ed).

What is the Shroud, and what relevance does it have for the world today?

What is the Shroud?

The Christian world is rich in relics. The most sacred of the relics claim to be the items from the lifetime of Jesus Christ(as). It is always difficult to verify the authenticity of these items. The most famous relic available to us today is the Shroud of Turin, the alleged burial cloth of Jesus Christ(as).

The Gospels in the New Testament state that after the Crucifixion, Jesus Christ(as) was wrapped in a linen cloth:

‘And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.’1

‘And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound [weight]. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.’2

Some claim that the Shroud of Turin is this same burial cloth. There have been other claims made with respect to this heritage but the Shroud of Turin is accepted as the most impressive and most plausible. This status of the Shroud of Turin was confirmed when in 1898 the first photograph was taken of the Shroud by Secondo Pia.

The negative produced from this photograph revealed amazing levels of detail in the Shroud. Instead of a faint image that had been seen so far, the negative revealed a detailed image. Secondo Pia reportedly almost dropped the plate due to the shock he felt when he first viewed the photographic plate.

How old is the Turin Shroud?

The recorded history of the Shroud only dates back to the 13th / 14th century, yet recorded history of a cloth bearing the image of Jesus Christ(as) dates back almost two thousand years. There is evidence to suggest that other famous cloths, such as the Cloth of Edessa, are in fact the same cloth as the Shroud of Turin.

Turkish authorities have confirmed that an ancient bible thought to be 1,500 years old is being kept safe after being seized from a gang of smugglers.  The document is in Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, written in gold Syriac characters on leather pages loosely bound together with string.  It was part of a haul recovered 12 years ago by police targeting traffickers in ancient artefacts in southern Turkey.  After the case went before a judge it is thought the bible languished in a safe at the courthouse in Ankara and was only recently transferred to a museum in the city.

1. Evidence of the Holy Quran 

The Holy Quran emphatically proves that Jesus has passed away like other mortal human beings, and is no longer alive anywhere. It clearly states that Jesus possessed only human characteristics, and was in no way divine but a servant of God and his messenger. From birth to death, he was subject to all the physical and biological limitations that God has ordained for human beings.

First evidence: All human beings live and die in this world.

Prophets belong to the human race, and they are, therefore, subject to the eternal Divine law that human beings live and die in this world. The Quran states :

"Therein (i.e. on the earth or physical world) shall you live, and therein shall you die, and therefrom shall you be raised." (7:25)

"And there is for you in the earth an abode and a provision." (7: 4)

"Have We not made the earth draw to itself the living and the dead." (77: 25, 26)

"From it (i.e. the earth) We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it raise you a second time." (20:55)

In these verses God has set forth His law that all human beings shall live their lives, with their physical bodies, in this world. Furthermore, it is opposed to the Divine law, according to which prophets have to bear persecution here in this world, that Jesus should be raised up to heaven when he was opposed by the Jews. His supposed physical life in heaven for two thousand years without food or drink is also opposed to the Divine law expressed in the above verses.

Second Evidence: Physical life depends on food and drink.

God has described His law, applicable not only to ordinary people but to all prophets as well, that life depends on food and drink:

"We did not send before you (O Muhammad) any messenger but they surely ate food." (25:20)

"We did not give them (i.e. the prophets) bodies not eating food." (21:8)

Of Jesus and his righteous mother, it is stated : "They both used to eat food" (5:7). So if Jesus no longer eats food — all Muslims hold that he does not eat food in heaven — he cannot, by the Divine law stated above, be alive with his physical body. The body requires food, so Jesus no longer eating food must be dead.

Third Evidence: Human body suffers ravages of time.

There is not a single human body in the world which is impervious to change. The living body is necessarily changing all the time. The Quran states:

"And We granted abiding for ever (khuld) to no mortal before you (O Muhammad). If you die, will they abide (khalidun)" (21:34).

"They (i.e. the prophets) did not abide for ever (khalidun)" (21:8).

As regards the meaning of the word khulud (translated above as abiding for ever), the famous Quranic dictionary of Imam Raghib explains:

"Khulud is that a thing be immune from decay, and that it endures in an unchanging condition. The Arabs call such a thing khulud... i.e., to persist in one condition, not being subject to change" (pp. 153, 154).

According to Arabic lexicology, therefore, khulud signifies persistence in one and the same state, with no change or decay taking place. In the verses above, a Divine law has been explained under which every person is affected by the passage of time. He is first a child, then an adult, then old and finally he dies. This is corroborated by many other verses, for example:

"Allah is He Who created you from a state of weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then ordained weakness and hoary hair after strength." (30:54)

"Of you is he who is brought back to the worst part of life (i.e. old age) so that after knowledge he knows nothing." (22:5)

"And whomsoever We cause to live long, We reduce to an abject state in creation. Do they not understand?" (36:68)

A general law of God has been stated here, to which no human being is an exception. From being a child, a person develops physically to attain his fullest development. After that he begins to decline, and ultimately reaches his ‘second childhood’ when he loses all his former attainments.

If, for the sake of argument, Jesus were to return to this world, he would be about 2000 years of age, and hence, according to the above Divine law, too old to be capable of doing anything at all. In fact, it is certain that, under this law, Jesus died a very long time ago.

Fourth Evidence: Death of all Prophets
"The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger; messengers before him had indeed passed away." (5:75)

"And Muhammad is only a messenger — messengers have already passed away before him. If, then, he dies or is killed, will you turn back upon your heels?" (3:143)

The second verse here explains the first one. Both verses are similarly worded, the first referring to Jesus, and the second to the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The Quran’s verdict here is very clear for a truth-seeker. The first verse explicitly states that all prophets before Jesus had died — and all Muslims accept this. In the second verse, the same words are used to state that all prophets before the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him) had died. In fact, since no prophet arose between Jesus and the Holy Prophet, the second verse could only have been revealed specifically to show that Jesus had died. Classical works of Arabic grammar tell us that, owing to the prefix al (the), the word messengers (al-rusul, lit. "the messengers") in the above two verses really means all messengers (see Bahr al-Muhit, vol. 3, p. 68).

Meaning of khala

It should be remembered that the word khala (translated above as "passed away") in the past tense without a particle, when used about human beings, refers to their death (see Lisan al-‘Arab and Aqrab al-Mawarad). In the Quran too, whenever the words qad khalat without the particle ila are used about any persons, the meaning is that they passed away and died, and will not return to this world. For instance:
"Those are a people that have passed away (qad khalat)." (2:134)
"…before which other nations have passed away (qad khalat)." (13:30)
"…among nations that have passed away (qad khalat) before them." (46:18)
"Such has been the way of Allah with those who have passed away (khalat) before." (33:38)

In interpreting the two verses about all prophets before Jesus and the Holy Prophet (may peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him) having passed away, the commentators have generally adopted the same meaning:
"The Holy Prophet would leave the world as had done previous prophets, by natural death or murder." (Qanwa ‘ala Baidawi, vol. 3, p.124)

In fact, the above verse about the Holy Prophet (3:143) itself clarifies the meaning of khala (passing away of all previous prophets) by using the words "if he dies or is killed" with regard to him. Obviously, the "passing away" of all previous prophets must also be one or other of "dying" or "being killed".

Fifth Evidence: All "gods" are dead

All those who are taken to be gods besides the One God are described by the Quran as "dead":
"And those whom they call on besides Allah created nothing, while they are themselves created. Dead (are they), not living. And they know not when they will be raised." (16:20-21)

And as to Jesus being taken for a god, the Quran itself bears witness:
"Certainly they disbelieve who say: ‘Allah, He is the Messiah, son of Mary’." (5:72)

These verses prove conclusively that Jesus, who is taken to be ‘god’ by a large section of mankind and is called by them as "Lord Jesus", must have been dead when these verses were revealed. Otherwise, this exception would have been mentioned here.

After amwat — "Dead (are they)" — the words ghairu ahya’-in — "not living" — clarify the matter absolutely, and re-affirm the death of these "gods".

Sixth Evidence: Jesus’ second coming contradicts Finality of Prophethood

Jesus’ coming again into this world would infringe the principle of the Finality of Prophethood because the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him) is the last and final prophet according to that principle. The Quran says:
"Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the prophets." (33:40)

The Holy Prophet’s being the last prophet (Khatam an-nabiyyin) necessitates that after him there should not appear any prophet, neither a new one nor a former one. Just as the coming of a fresh prophet would infringe the Finality of Prophethood, so would the appearance of a former prophet, because the Last Prophet is the one who appears after all other prophets. If Jesus comes after the Holy Prophet, he (Jesus) would be the Last Prophet, the Khatam an-nabiyyin.

It is wrong to argue that, in his supposed second coming, Jesus would not be a prophet (nabi). For the Quran says:
"Jesus said: I am a servant of God: He has given me the Book and made me a prophet, and made me blessed wherever I may be." (19:30-31)

So, were he to return to this world he would still be a prophet. His coming without prophethood would be meaningless, for the task of leadership of the Muslims (Imamah) and successorship to the Holy Prophet (Khilafah) could be performed by a member of the Muslim community. Hence it stands proved that Jesus died, as did all other prophets, and that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him) is the Last Prophet.

Seventh Evidence: Holy Quran specifically mentions Jesus’ death

Having explained so many general principles on the subject of life and death, it was not necessary that the Holy Quran should speak specifically of the death of Jesus. Nevertheless, Almighty God has particularly mentioned Jesus’ death in the Quran. When the Jews succeeded in their plans to have Jesus sentenced to crucifixion, he prayed to God to be delivered from this fate, and was answered by Him thus :
"O Jesus, I will cause you to die, and exalt you to My presence, and clear you of those who disbelieve and make those who follow you above those who disbelieve till the day of Judgment." (3:54)

Here God made with Jesus four promises:
"Cause you to die" (tawaffa), i.e., Jesus would not be killed by the Jews, but would die a natural death.

"Exalt you in My presence" (raf‘a), i.e., he would not be crucified, which the Jews sought to do to prove him accursed, but rather he would receive Divine nearness. In fact, raf‘a is the opposite of wad‘a, the latter meaning disgrace and the former meaning honouring.

"Clear you of those who disbelieve" (tathir), i.e., he would be cleared of the Jews’ allegations against him, as he was by the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

"Make those who follow you above those who disbelieve till the day of Judgement", i.e. his followers would forever have the upper hand over his rejectors.

The above verse proves that Jesus has died, for raf‘a (exaltation to God’s presence) is attained only after death when all the material veils have been removed. Every righteous person is granted raf‘a to God after his death. The Holy Prophet has said:
"When a believer nears death, angels come to him. So if he is righteous, they say: ‘O pure soul! leave, you were in a pure body’ … So that pure soul comes out, then they take it to the heavens and its gates are opened for it." (Mishkat).

Hence, whenever a righteous individual dies, the angels take his soul up to heaven. The very same happened in Jesus’ case, so that after his death it was his soul that was raised to heaven, and he joined the ranks of the righteous among the dead.

Thus God fulfilled all the above promises in order: He rescued Jesus from the hands of the Jews, and eventually granted him a natural death; after his death, God honoured his soul with Divine nearness; He cleared him of the Jews’ allegations against him through the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him) and He gave Jesus’ followers the upper hand over his rejectors.

Eight Evidence: Christians went astray after Jesus’ death

Jesus’ statement, on the Day of Judgment, that his people made him a "god" after his death, is recorded in the Holy Quran as follows:
"And when God will say: ‘O Jesus, did you say to men, Take me and my mother for two gods besides God?’ He will reply: ‘Glory be to Thee! it was not for me to say what I had no right to say. If I had said it, Thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Thy mind. Surely Thou art the great Knower of the unseen. I said to them naught save as Thou didst command me: Serve God, my Lord and your Lord; and I was a witness of them so long as I was among them, but when Thou didst cause me to die Thou wast the Watcher over them. And Thou art Witness of all things’." (5:116, 117)

This extract proves the following:
Jesus shall deny preaching the erroneous present-day Christian doctrine of his divinity;
He shall confirm the teaching he actually gave to his people;
So long as Jesus was among his people, his followers held correct beliefs;
It was after Jesus’ tawaffa (translated above as ‘Thou didst cause me to die’) that their beliefs became corrupted.

Meaning of tawaffa

Lexicons of Arabic tell us that tawaffa Allahu fulan-an, i.e., ‘God did the act of tawaffa to such a one’, means that God took his soul and caused him to die. This is the meaning given in Taj al-‘urus, Al-Qamus, Surah, Asas al-Balaghah, Al-Sihah and Kullyat abi-l-Baqa.

In the above verse, Jesus speaks of two distinct periods of time. The first one is mentioned in the words "so long as I was among them", and the second one when only "Thou wast the Watcher over them"; ‘them’ being Jesus’ people, the Christians. The first period (that of Jesus’ presence among his people) changed into the second period (that of only God, not Jesus, being their watcher) as a result of tawaffaitani or "when Thou didst cause me (Jesus) to die".

Now according to the above verse, the Christians held right beliefs in the first period, and wrong views in the second. As the Quran tells us repeatedly, and as all Muslims believe, Christian beliefs had become corrupted (or, in other words, the second period had begun) by the time of the advent of the Holy Prophet. So Jesus was dead by that time, as the second period was to come after tawaffaitani or the death of Jesus.

Summary

According to the Holy Quran, Jesus holds no more than the following three positions:
He is a mortal from among mortals;
He is a prophet of God from among the prophets;
He is one of those who is worshipped as god by some people.

The Jews believe him to be an ordinary mortal, while the Christians worship him. The Muslims accept him as one of God’s prophets. The Quran has proved Jesus to be dead with respect to each one of the above three positions.

1. Jesus as an ordinary mortal:

The Quran states:
"We have not made before thee (O Muhammad) any mortal to abide for ever. If you die, will they (the opponents) abide?" (21:34)

This verse shows that the human body is never immune from change, and that it must live and die here in this world. As Jesus too was human, he must be subject to the laws God has established for men. Therefore, under the Quranic law "every soul must taste of death", he has died.

2. Jesus as a prophet:
"And Muhammad is only a messenger —messengers have already passed away before him." (3:143)

This verse proves the death of all previous messengers by the time of its revelation. Jesus was thus dead by that time.

3. Jesus as a supposed Deity:

As regards all those who are taken for gods besides Allah, the Quran tells us:
"Dead (are they), not living. And they know not when they will be raised." (16:21)

It is universally known, and confirmed by the Quran, that Christians believe Jesus to be divine and call to him in their prayers. So, according to the above verse, Jesus is dead and "will not answer them till the day of Judgment."

Hence it is fully and conclusively proved that Jesus died long ago, and belief in his continued life is against the clearest teachings of the Holy Quran.

And We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow in their footsteps, confirming that which was (revealed) before him in the Torah, and We bestowed on him the Gospel wherein is guidance and a light, confirming that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah - a guidance and an admonition unto those who ward off (evil).[Surah Al-Ma'idah (Chapter of the Repast), Verse 46]

Lo! Allah preferred Adam and Noah and the Family of Abraham and the Family of Imran above (all His) creatures. • They were descendants one of another. Allah is Hearer, Knower. • (Remember) when the wife of Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed unto you that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. Lo! You, only You, are the Hearer, the Knower! • And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered – the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave your protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast. • And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence comes unto you this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah gives without stint to whom He will. • Then Zachariah prayed unto his Lord and said: My Lord! Bestow upon me of Your Bounty goodly offspring. Lo! You are the Hearer of Prayer. • And the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: Allah gives you glad tidings of (a son whose name is) John, (who comes) to confirm a word from Allah lordly, chaste, a prophet of the righteous. • He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when age has overtaken me already and my wife is barren? (The angel) answered: So (it will be). Allah does what He will.[Al-Imran (Chapter of the Family of Imran), Verses 33-40]

And when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah has chosen you and made you pure, and has preferred you above (all) the women of creation. • O Mary! Be obedient to your Lord, prostrate yourself and bow with those who bow (in worship).[Al-Imran (Chapter of the Family of Imran), Verses 42-43]

… when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East, • And had chosen seclusion from them…[Surah Maryam (Chapter of Mary), Verses 16-17]

(And remember) when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, illustrious in the world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (unto Allah). • He will speak unto mankind in his cradle and in his manhood, and he is of the righteous. • She said: My Lord! How can I have a child when no mortal has touched me? He said: So (it will be). Allah creates what He will. If He decrees a thing, He says unto it only: Be! And it is. • And He will teach him the Scripture and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel, • And will make him a messenger unto the Children of Israel, (saying): Lo! I come unto you with a sign from your Lord. Lo! I fashion for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, and I breathe into it and it is a bird, by Allah's Leave. I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I raise the dead, by Allah's Leave. And I announce unto you what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Lo! Herein verily is a portent for you, if you are to be believers. • And (I come) confirming that which was before me of the Torah, and to make lawful some of that which was forbidden unto you. I come unto you with a sign from your Lord, so keep your duty to Allah and obey me. • Lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.[Surah Al-Imran (Chapter of the Family of Imran), Verses 45-51]

And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place. • And the pangs of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of the palm-tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died ere this and had become a thing of naught, forgotten! • Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Your Lord has placed a rivulet beneath you, • And shake the trunk of the palm-tree toward you, you will cause ripe dates to fall upon you. • So eat and drink and be consoled. And if you meet any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal. • Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! You have come with an amazing thing. • O sister of Aaron! Your father was not a wicked man nor was your mother a harlot. • Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy? • He spoke: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and has appointed me a Prophet, • And has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I remain alive, • And (has made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and has not made me arrogant, unblest. • Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive! • Such was Jesus, son of Mary: (this is) a statement of the truth concerning which they doubt. • It befits not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should take unto Himself a son. Glory be to Him! When He decrees a thing, He says unto it only: Be! And it is. • And lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So serve Him. That is the right path.[Surah Maryam (Chapter of Mary), Verses 22-36]

Whereby almost the heavens are torn, and the earth is split asunder and the mountains fall in ruins, • That you ascribe unto the Beneficent a son, • When it is not meet for (the Majesty of) the Beneficent that He should choose a son. [Surah Maryam (Chapter of Mary), Verses 90-92]

The Originator of the heavens and the earth! When He decrees a thing, He says unto it only: Be! And it is.[Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter of the Heifer), Verse 117]

There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Beneficent as a slave. • Verily He knows them and numbers them with (right) numbering. [Surah Maryam (Chapter of Mary), Verses 93-94]

They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary. The Messiah (himself) said: O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Lo! Whoso ascribes partners unto Allah, for him Allah has forbidden paradise. His abode is the Fire. For evil-doers there will be no helpers. • They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! Allah is the third of three; when there is no Allah save the One Allah. If they desist not from so saying a painful doom will fall on those of them who disbelieve.[Surah Al-Ma'idah (Chapter of the Repast), Verses 72-73]

And when Allah says: O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say unto mankind: Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah? He says: Be glorified! It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right. If I used to say it, then you knew it. You know what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Your Mind. Lo! You, only You, are the Knower of Things Hidden? • I spoke unto them only that which You commanded me, (saying): Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. I was a witness of them while I dwelt among them, and when you took me you were the Watcher over them. You are Witness over all things.[Surah Al-Ma'idah (Chapter of the Repast), Verses 116-117]

Will they not rather turn unto Allah and seek forgiveness of Him? For Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. • The Messiah, son of Mary, was no other than a messenger, messengers (the like of whom) had passed away before him. And his mother was a saintly woman. And they both used to eat (earthly) food. See how We make the revelations clear for them, and see how they are turned away![Surah Al-Ma'idah (Chapter of the Repast), Verses 74-75]

And when Jesus son of Mary said: O Children of Israel! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah unto you, confirming that which was (revealed) before me in the Torah, and bringing good tidings of a messenger who comes after me, whose name is the Praised One. Yet when he has come unto them with clear proofs, they say: This is mere magic.[Surah Al-Saff (Chapter of the Ranks), Verse 6]

But when Jesus became conscious of their disbelief, he cried: Who will be my helpers in the Cause of Allah? The disciples said: We will be Allah's helpers. We believe in Allah and bear you witness that we have surrendered (unto Him). • Our Lord! We believe in that which you have revealed and we follow him whom you have sent. Enrol us among those who witness (to the truth). • And they (the disbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed (against them): and Allah is the Best of Schemers. • (And remember) when Allah said: O Jesus! Lo! I am gathering you and causing you to ascend unto Me and am cleansing you of those who disbelieve and am setting those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then unto Me you will (all) return, and I shall judge between you as to that wherein you used to differ. • As for those who disbelieve I shall chastise them with a heavy chastisement in the world and the Hereafter; and they will have no helpers. • And as for those who believe and do good works, He will pay them their wages in full. Allah loves not wrong-doers. • This (which) We recite unto you is a revelation and a wise reminder. • Lo! The likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust; then He said unto him: Be! And he is. • (This is) the truth from your Lord (O Muhammad), so be not you of those who waver. • And whoso disputes with you concerning him, after the knowledge which has come unto you, say (unto him): Come! We will summon our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves; then we will pray humbly (to our Lord) and (solemnly) invoke the curse of Allah upon those who lie. • Lo! This verily is the true narrative. There is no Allah save Allah, and lo! Allah, He verily is, is the Mighty, the Wise. • And if they turn away, then lo! Allah is Aware of (who are) the corrupters. • Say: O People of the Scripture! Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him).[Surah Al-Imran (Chapter of the Family of Imran), Verses 52-64]

And because of their disbelief and of their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny; • And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah's messenger - they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! Those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain. • But Allah took him up unto Himself. Allah was ever Mighty, Wise. • There is not one of the People of the Scripture but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them - [Surah Al-Nisa’ (Chapter of Women), Verses 156-159]

O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three" - Cease! (It is) better for you! - Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender. • The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso scorns His service and is proud, all such will He assemble unto Him;[Surah Al-Nisa’ (Chapter of Women), Verses 171-172]

Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.[Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter of the Heifer), Verse 136]

Unto Allah belongs the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is therein, and He is Able to do all things.[Surah Al-Ma'idah (Chapter of the Repast), Verse 120]

What does the Holy Quran say about Jesus
( Prophet Isa a.s)
Most of the following was gathered from the foot notes of the Holy Quran that I have. It is translated and documented by Minister Abdullah Yusuf Ali.

Muslims believe that Jesus peace be upon him according to the Holy Quran is a wonderful, humble, generous messenger of God who came down and revealed God's words to his people, the people of Israel. Muslims do not believe that Jesus is God, nor they believe that God ever chose to come down to earth in a form of a man to die for our sins to purify us and forgive us.

According to Islam, Jesus never died on the cross, nor ever wanted to die on the cross, nor ever was born to die on the cross. Muslims believe that Jesus was sentenced to death, and people thought that he got executed on the cross. The Holy Quran rejects this idea, and claims that it is a false one. Jesus never died on the cross, nor he ever died for anyone's sins. Let us look at what the Holy Quran (The Muslims Holy Scripture) says about this issue:

Let's look at verse 4:156-159 "That they rejected Faith; That they uttered against Mary A grave false charge; That they said (in boast): 'We killed Christ Jesus The son of Mary, The Messenger of Allah.' But they killed him not, Nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjunction to follow, for of a surety they killed him not. Nay, Allah raised him up Unto Himself; and Allah Is Exalted in Power, Wise. And there is none of the people of the book (Jews and Christians) But must believe in him (Jesus) Before his death; And on the Day of Judgment He (Jesus) will be a witness Against them." The false charge against Mary was that she was unchaste. Such a charge is bad enough to make against any woman, but to make it against Mary, the mother of Jesus, was to bring into redicule Allah's power itself. Islam is specially strong in guarding the reputation of women. Slanderers of women are bound to bring four witnesses in support of their accusation, and if they fail to produce four witnesses, they are be flogged with eighty stripes and debarred forever from being competent witnesses.

Let us look at verse 24:4 "And those who launch A charge against chaste women, And produce not four witnesses (To support their allegations) Flog them with eighty stripes; And reject their evidence Ever after: for such men Are wicked transgressors. Unless they repent thereafter And mend (their conduct); For Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful." Here we see in this Holy Verse how much Allah Almighty cares about not criticizing women unless we are absolutely sure about it and we can provide at least 4 witnesses to support our allegation.

Now in 4:156-159 above "......Nor crucified him,....."

The end of the life of Jesus on earth is as much involved in mystery as his birth, and indeed the greater part of his private life, except the three main years of his ministry. It is not profitable to discuss the many doubts and conjectures among the early Christians sects and among Muslims theologians. The Orthodox-Christian Churches make it a cardinal point of their doctrine that his life was taken on the Cross, that he died and was buried, that on the third day he rose in the body with his wounds intact, and walked about and conversed, and ate with his disciples, and was afterwards taken up bodily to heaven. This is necessary for the theological doctrine of blood sacrifice and vicarious atonement for sins, which is rejected by Islam. But some of the early Christian sects did not believe that Christ was killed on the cross. The Basilidans believed that someone else was substituted for him. The Docetate held that Christ never had a real physical or natural body, but only an apparent or phantom body, and that his crucifixion was only apparent, not real. The Marcionite Gospel (about A.C. 138) denied that Jesus was born, and merely said that he appeared in human form. The Gospel of St. Barnabas supported the theory of substitution on the Cross. The Quranic teaching is that Christ was not crucified nor killed by the Jews, not with standing certain apparent circumstances which produced that illusion in the minds of some of his enemies; that disputations, doubts, and conjectures on such matters are vain; and that he was taken up to Allah Almighty.

Let us look at verse 3:55 "Behold! Allah said: O Jesus! I will take thee And raise thee to Myself And clear thee (of the falsehoods) Of those who blaspheme; I will make those Who follow thee superior To those who reject faith, To the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, And I will judge Between you of the matters wherein ye dispute." Here we see that Allah Almighty promised Jesus peace be upon him to raise him to heaven. Jesus was charged by the Jews with blasphemy as claiming to be God or the son of God. The Christians (except a few early sects which were annihilated by persecution, and the modern sect of Unitarians), adopted the substance of the claim, and made it the cornerstone of their faith. Allah Almighty clears Jesus of such a charge or claim. Those who follow Jesus are the Muslims and the Christians who don't believe he is God. All of the controversies about dogma and faith will disappear when we appear before Allah. He will judge not by what we profess but what we are.

In 4:156-159 "......Nay Allah raised him up Unto Himself....."

There is a difference of opinion as to the exact interpretation of this verse. The words are: The Jews did not kill Jesus, but Allah raised him up (rafa'ahu...in Arabic) to Himself. Some people hold that Jesus did not die the usual human death, but still lives in the body in heaven, which is the generally accepted Muslim view. Another hold that he did die but not when he was supposed to be crucified, and that is being "raised up" unto Allah means that instead of being disgraced as a malefactor, as the Jews intended, he was on the contrary honoured by Allah Almighty as His Messenger. The same word (rafa'a) is used in association with honour in connection with Al Mustafa (Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him).
